Why lining drive drums

Productivity and low energy consumption predetermined the widespread use of belt conveyors in production. The need for such equipment appeared a very long time ago, and belt conveyors in a form close to modern (a flexible canvas with a closed motion path) began to work at the end of the 18th century. The main purpose of the belt conveyor is the movement of bulk, piece or other cargo over short distances. But in some cases, the length of the belt conveyor route can reach 10-12 km.

It is very important to ensure the maximum efficiency of the conveyor, as well as any industrial equipment. Lining, namely sheathing of the drum rim with special materials is one of the ways to achieve this efficiency.

Features of the drive drum

The main element of the belt conveyor is the drive drum. It is the drum, receiving rotational movement from the engine, that provides the traction of the conveyor belt and the necessary direction of movement. In general terms, the drum is a shaft with a metal shell having a cylindrical or barrel shape. Manufacturers supply drums “as is”, that is, without additional protection. Therefore, in the interaction of the rubber surface of the conveyor track and the metal drum, potential errors were initially laid, namely slipping and slipping of the tape.

These problems contribute to the descent of the load-carrying track, abrasion and delamination of the sides of the conveyor belt, increased abrasive wear of the drive units and the drum itself. All this reduces the efficiency of the entire pipeline as a whole.

If the conveyor works in difficult conditions

The issue of protecting drums is of high relevance when operating belt conveyors in difficult conditions. This applies to conveyor systems with small diameter drive drums, as well as conveyors moving loose, wet or sticky goods. Here, in addition to disrupting technological processes, the probability of failure of drive mechanisms that come into contact with spilling and sticking materials increases.

The logical solution to increase the tension of the track is ineffective here, as it leads to damage to the tape, especially in the area of the butt seam.

Liner results

The process driving drum lining is the coating of the working surfaces of the drums with a protective compound – rubber, rubber-ceramic material or polyurethane. This protects the surface of the drum in contact with the moving part of the belt. In this way, the actual protection of the drum against corrosion is achieved. As a rule, corrugations are applied to the outer part of the lining, which is in direct contact with the tape.

The corrugated surface helps to remove dirt and moisture from the drum. And the main result of the lining is to obtain optimal adhesion of the drum and belt, which ensures the stability of the conveyor and the efficiency of the process. Due to this, the service life of the equipment is extended, and as a result, the profitability of production increases.

Thus, the main results of lining a conveyor belt are as follows:

  • improving the adhesion between the belt and the drum;
  • increasing the life of the conveyor;
  • protecting the metal parts of the drum from corrosion;
  • stabilization of the belt and the transported load;
  • Efficient and trouble-free operation of the conveyor.

The most common drum lining technology is cold vulcanization. In this case, lining work is carried out on site, usually without removing the drive drum. Finished lining plates are attached to the drum with multi-component adhesives. And the most effective and more expensive lining technology is hot vulcanization. It is carried out in the factory, as it requires the use of an autoclave.
